AVACADOS - Avacados contain a substance called persin. Large amounts fed to a dog can be toxic. If you plant avocados, be careful to keep your dog away from them as persin is also contained in the leaves, seeds and bark of the fruit.
ALCOHOL - Beer, liquor, wine and any other alcoholic beverages are not good for your dog. Alcohol can effect a dog's liver and brain just like it does in humans. Even a small amount can cause vomiting, diarrhea, problems with coordination, central nervous system depression, breathing problems, coma and possibly death.
ONIONS - Any form of onion whether it be raw, powdered, cooked or dehydrated is not good for dogs. Onions can destroy a dog's red blood cells, which can lead to anemia.
GARLIC - Any form of garlic whether it be raw, powdered, cooked or dehydrated is not good for dogs.
CAFFEINE - Large quantities of caffeine can be fatal and there is no antidote. Symptoms of caffeine poisoning include rapid breathing, muscle tremors, heart palpitations, restlessness and seizures. Aside from tea and coffee, caffeine can be found in other things such as stimulant energy drinks, colas, cocoa, and some cold medicines.
GRAPES - All colored grapes can cause kidney failure. Even a small amount can make your dog ill. Vomiting is an early symptom, followed by lethargy.
RAISINS - As with grapes, raisins will cause the same reactions.
MACADAMIA NUTS - Even a small amount of these nuts can make your dog ill. Symptoms of poisoning include vomiting, elevated body temperature, rapid heart rate, muscle tremors and weakness or paralysis of the hindquarters. A combination of macadamia nuts and chocolate will make symptoms worse and could possibly lead to death.
XYLITOL - This can be found in some gum, toothpaste, baked goods and diet foods. Xylitol can cause your dog's blood sugar level to drop and can cause liver failure. Initial symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, and loss of coordination. Your dog could possibly have seizures too. It may only take a few days for liver failure to occur.
CHOCOLATE - All chocolate, including white, contains a chemical called theobromine which is toxic to dogs. Dark chocolate, baking chocolate and chocolate mulch are the most dangerous. Even your dog licking chocolate icing from a bowl can cause an adverse reaction such as vomiting, diarrhea and excessive thirst. Chocolate can cause abnormal heart rhythm, seizures, tremors, and death.
FAT FROM MEAT - Both uncooked and cooked can cause pancreatitis.
BONES - Dogs can choke on bones. They can also splinter and cause lacerations and obstruction of your dog's digestive system.
PEACH AND PLUM PITS - A dog can choke on the pits. The pits can also cause intestinal obstruction. Peach and plum pits also contain cyanide, which is both poisonous to both humans and dogs.
PERSIMMON SEEDS - The seeds from this fruit can cause inflammation of the small intestine in dogs.
RAW EGGS - There is always the possibility of a raw egg containing E.coli or Salmonella. Also, there is an enzyme in raw eggs that interferes with the absorption of a particular B vitamin. This can cause skin problems as well as with your dog's fur if your dog has been eating them for a long time.
RAW MEAT AND RAW FISH - Just like in raw eggs, raw meat and fish can also contain bacteria that can cause food poisoning. Certain breeds of fish such as salmon, shad, trout or sturgeon can contain a particular parasite that causes "fish disease" or "salmon poisoning disease." If your dog is not treated, the disease can be fatal within 2 weeks. Symptoms include vomiting, fever and large lymph nodes.
SALT - Too much salt can lead to sodium ion poisoning. It's not wise to feed your dog salty foods such as pretzels and chips. Symptoms of poisoning include excessive thirst, vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, depression, elevated body temperature, seizures and possibly death.
SUGAR - Too much sugar is not good for humans as well as dogs. It can cause dental problems, obesity and can possibly lead to diabetes.
BREAD DOUGH - If your dog eats bread dough while it's rising, the dough will continue to rise in your dog's stomach and which can stretch the abdomen and cause severe pain. Also, when the yeast ferments the dough to make it rise, it makes alcohol that can lead to alcohol poisoning.
HUMAN MEDICINES - While some human medicine can be given to your dog, always check with your veterinarian before administering any as some can be deadly for your dog.
BAKING POWDER - This is toxic to your dog.
BAKING SODA - This is toxic to your dog.
NUTMEG AND OTHER SPICES - Many spices can be toxic to your dog. Always lock them out of reach.
