Pet Safety in Hot Weather

Pets can suffer from heat stroke just like people can. It's really important that you always keep your pet hydrated, especially when the mercury starts to rise. While I take my Akita outside all year round, I am extremely careful in the summertime. If you have a breed like mine with a double coat, it's a good idea to take any long walks early in the morning before it gets too hot or in the evening after the sun goes down.  Even if you own a breed with short hair, you still need to be careful in the heat. If you like going to the park with your dog, always take bottled water and don't over do.  Many pet stores carry small portable bowls. I use one that is a rubbery material and collapses down like a pancake.  It has a hole on the outside lip where I put a carabiner and suspend from my belt loop.  This bowl is so handy, I always take it with me when we go to the pet store.

Symptoms of overheating in pets include excessive panting, increased respiratory and heart rate, drooling, difficulty breathing, stupor, mild weakness and collapse. Some other symptoms may include elevated body temperature over 104 degrees, seizures, bloody diarrhea and vomiting. Older pets, overweight pets, pets with flat faces and those with heart and lung diseases should be kept cool in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible.

Never leave your pet alone in the car, especially in the summer as this can lead to a fatal heat stroke on a hot day.
